Reports have surfaced about a potential merger between Peter Obi and other political leaders to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) one year after Obi’s 2023 presidential bid, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner.
Tanko, the Chief Spokesperson for Obi-Datti and Director of Media for the Labour Party (LP), commented on the matter, emphasizing that Obi’s focus is on the betterment of Nigeria and not merely on acquiring power. “His Excellency, Peter Gregory is not interested in a merger solely for the sake of power. He seeks partnerships that will lift Nigerians out of poverty, improve healthcare, ensure access to potable drinking water, and solve the power supply issues.”
Tanko further clarified that Obi is interested in mergers driven by ideology and comprehensive programs, not just power. Any potential merger will be thoroughly scrutinized to ensure alignment of values.
Recently, Obi met with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to discuss national issues, fueling speculation about a merger. However, former House of Representatives member Tajudeen Yusuf doubts the likelihood of such a merger, despite their past collaboration in 2019
He noted that Atiku, following their meeting, reaffirmed his intention to continue contesting presidential elections, signaling that he is not stepping aside for Obi. Yusuf believes this stance indicates that both men may run in the 2027 election, making a merger improbable.
